this is old as shit and probably not representative of my current thoughts, just ignore anything below old bit tbh
edit: again this is old as shit and the rest of it can be ignored and im just leaving it for posterity's sake however here are some more relevant things:
1. pda chat is text, and is autotranslated to your specified language (expecting basically only english oocly pls)
2. pda messages can have attachments, and you can describe/link said attachment in that message (remember rule number 2 be realistic tho, and id prefer if links are actually sent they should be of in game screenshots or similar, no youtube links or anything like that, unless its an in-game video)
2b. pdas have cameras
3. pdas can be tracked and traced by any individual with the knowhow, tools and access to do it, just like any modern smartphone.
4. pdas are all connected to a large local network (think of it as like a small and isolated cell network), spanning across the entire zone. this network is largely isolated from the rest of the world and in most cases cannot communicate outside of the zone
5. the network is temporarily shut down when an emission occurs to prevent damage to equipment. with the help of the ecologists, this process is automated.
--old bit
this may be different for different servers and may not be 100% correct to that in the games/books, but this is how itll work here
also always a work in progress as how it works is developed
Infrastructure
stalkernet is made out of network towers scattered throughout the zone. if a tower goes down, stalkernet is completely down in the surrounding area until it is fixed or brought back up. emissions or other things occasionally bring towers down, and maintanence stalkers will come and fix them up. there is a central, hidden area where all data is stored. where it is is uknown
Chat
this is all in text
pda global: global chat sends a message to everyone connected to the local tower (its not exactly global but um ya)
pda broadcast: a type that sends an announcement message to all local pdas, accessible to only sysadmins
pda pms: pms can be sent between stalkers
anonymous: global and pms also have an "anonymous" feature. this feature lets you send a message anonymously and without your name attached. icly it encrypts the message when it is sent, so not even sysadmins can get the normal info they would get from a message
attachments: originally, i wanted attachments (such as pictures) to be only in pdabroad, but since people have done it in pdaglob before, its allowed in all forms
User permission levels
there are 3 levels of access in stalkernet:
1. normal users- self explanatory
2. sysadmins- people who admin stalkernet, has a decent amount of tools as their finger tips:
-locations: a sysadmin can get the current coordinates of a pda through its gps
-pms: sysadmins can view others pms
-message info: with each message they can see the following: where it was sent, the pda id it was sent from, and past handles of that pda
-i reserve the right to write more here when i think of them
3. master- only accessible from the secret main center, gives you complete control over all systems (known to never be used for an unknown reason)
Other/Misc
proxies/hiding your id- since everything is done based around the pda's id, proxies are impossible
getting more than someones handle as a normal user- impossible, thats all you need to know
will add more here as they came up too
Commands
here are all the commands and what they do, (at least the ones related with pdas/stalkernet):
pdalocal - sends a message to global chat. does not allow you to do it if you do not have a pda or are banned from global chat
pdapm - sends a message to the target in a pm. does not allow you to do it if they have blocked your pda
pdabroad - sends a message to broadcast. displays like such: [PDA-BROAD] message. only accessible if you have a pda and the sysadmin flag
pdaglobban - ban a specified handle from using global. bans the actual pda so a new pda is needed unless you get unbanned
pdablock - block a specified handle. they cannot pm you and you cannot see their messages in global chat (unknown if the sound will still play, didnt test that lmao)
questions? something that i myself have said before but i forgot here? lemme kno
